Memorial Globe

object, photography

material: glass jar, shredded Atlas of the world

The work deals with the political division of the world and its transformation.

The Memorial Globe is a jam bottle filled with a shredded Atlas of the world from the period of divided Europe - the so-called iron curtain. The book was published in Italy in the early 1980s, at the time of my birth. I obtained the atlas as expelled from the library of a non-profit organization in Turin, where I worked a few years ago. The outdatedness of political maps points to historical developments that have opened up the world to me.

The shredding of the atlas and its subsequent placement into a jam bottle refers to the closure of the past world order into the memory space. In the current Covid pandemic situation, when border permeability is complicated, this work is taking on new meanings.
